More about BMI
BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic measure. It does not account for muscle mass, bone density, age, sex, or ethnicity. Consult a healthcare provider for a complete assessment.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. The formula is BMI = kg/m2 where kg is a person's weight in kilograms and m2 is their height in metres squared.
BMI is a useful screening tool for identifying potential weight-related health issues in adults. However, it has limitations:
It does not directly measure body fat percentage
It may overestimate body fat in athletes and muscular individuals
It may underestimate body fat in older persons who have lost muscle mass
It does not account for differences in body composition between ethnic groups
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines BMI categories as:
Underweight: BMI less than 18.5 - May indicate nutritional deficiency or other health issues
Normal weight: BMI 18.5 to 24.9 - Generally considered a healthy range
Overweight: BMI 25 to 29.9 - May increase risk of certain health conditions
Obese Class I: BMI 30 to 34.9 - Moderate health risk
Obese Class II: BMI 35 to 39.9 - Severe health risk
Obese Class III: BMI 40 or greater - Very severe health risk
BMI should be used as a starting point for discussions with healthcare providers about overall health, rather than a definitive measure of health status.
